Game addiction

Almost two thirds of the Flemish population has played a game in the last month, and 3.6% of the gamers play more than three hours per day (iMinds Digimeter, 2014). So what makes games addictive? In this brief interview Tony van Rooij argues that you should be careful with the label of addiction and avoid using it for non-clinical cases. That said, a large group of people experience some problems controlling their gaming behavior. Problems are often reported in relationship to online gaming. Tony suggests that three factors play a role here: sophisticated and interactive reward systems in games, a virtual endlessness, and the social nature of gaming.
