PUBLICATION - Sports viewership goes down: what’s up for TV sports rights?

Increased competition for media sports rights, popularising the demand for live sports, was sealed with a couple of landmark rights deals for the rights to the Premier League, NFL and NBA. However, recent developments in audience behaviour put into question the long-held belief about sport's popularity. A few examples indicate that sports viewership has started to decline and that young media consumers are turning away from television sports. The article puts these developments into context and assesses the implications for the future sale and exploitation of television sports rights.
