Elena Núñez Castellar received her degree in Psychology at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in 2006. During the last year of her studies she worked as a clinical neuropsychology assistant. She got expertise in the selection and interpretation of standardized neuropsychological tests to investigate different cognitive functions (e.g. memory, attention, planning, abstract thinking). In 2007 she started her doctoral studies in the Department of Experimental Psychology at Ghent University. She obtained her degree of Doctor in Psychology in 2011 with her thesis "Decision making in interpersonal Situations: Cooperation and competition". During her PhD she got broad experience with different research methods in cognitive neuroscience, namely EEG (electro-encephalography). Her doctoral project aimed to investigate how people adapt their behavior, both during social interactions (for example when two people should perform a task together) and conditions of individual task performance. After her PhD, she worked until March 2012 as a post-doctoral researcher in the field of cognitive control.

Since March 2012 she joined the research group for Media, Innovation and Communication Technologies (imec-mict-UGent) as a full-time researcher in the Games at School-project (G@S). She also supports other projects aimed to conduct fundamental research like ‘Serious games under the microscope’ and ‘Exploring gendered play’ and applied projects into immersive media usage like ‘GIPA’, ‘AIVIE’, ‘ASPRO+’ and ‘Telesurgery’.

Recently she got a three years postdoctoral grant (BOF Ghent University) to work on a project aimed to map flow experience by electroencephalography (EEG) dynamics and connectivity during immersive media use in collaboration with the research group of Prof. Daniele Marinazzo (Department of Data Analysis). However, Elena will stay involved in several mict projects as QoE-expert.
