Glen Joris is a junior researcher at the research group for Media, Innovation and Communication Technologies (imec-mict-UGent). He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Management (AP Hogeschool, 2014) and a Master’s degree in Communication Sciences (University of Antwerp, 2016).

His master’s thesis (published) focused on the use of ad blockers, as a mechanical form of ad avoidance. After a job as a marketeer at an independent Belgian news website, he joined imec-mict-UGent in March 2017. In his former research project he investigated and explored the use of new information technologies to enhance privacy and data management practices.

Since March 2018 he works full time on NewsDNA, an interdisciplinary four-year research project (2018-2022) in which the primary aim is to develop and test an algorithm that uses news diversity as a key driver for personalized news recommendation. In his first study he explored how the concept of news diversity is built on different conceptual and normative assumptions towards news media and democracy. By conducting a systematic literature review, he examined how the current empirical literature is conceptualizing this concept.

Glen loves to write an opinion editorial and to collaborate with researchers from other fields.
