Tom Evens is an Associate Professor at the Department of Communication Sciences at Ghent University, Belgium. He holds Masters Degrees in Communication Sciences (2005) and Business Administration (2006) from Ghent University. Tom teaches in Media Economics (Ba1), Innovation and Tech Policy (Ma) and Business Models in Media and Technology (Ma). He is fellow holder of the chair ‘Media in a Society in Transition’.

In 2013, Tom finished his PhD on the political economy of the television industry. He specialises in the economics and policies of digital media and technology markets, and has widely published on the media business in international peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes. He is the lead author of The Political Economy of Television Sports Rights (Palgrave, 2013) and Platform Power and Policy in Transforming Television Markets (Springer, 2018) and the co-editor of Media Management Matters: Challenges and Opportunities for Bridging Theory and Practice (Routledge, 2020) and Media en Innovatie in een Sameneving in Verandering (ASP Editions, 2021).

Tom is an editorial board member of the Journal of Digital Media & PolicyInternet Policy ReviewCommunication & SportMedia Industries Journal and Journal of Media Business Studies, for which he also serves as a co-editor. He heads of the Media Policy and Regulation special interest group of the European Media Management Association (emma) and the Media Industries & Policy division of the Netherlands-Flanders Communication Association (NeFCA), and served as the Deputy President of the European Media Management Association (between 2017 – 2019). Since 2016, he is appointed an independent expert member of the SARC Media.
