07/03:  Moviemiento #1: Landless Moroccans

(Soraya El Kahloui, 2017)

Landless Moroccans is the first movie screened in the framework of the Moviemiento film festival, a series of four documentaries and/or political films dealing with issues of resistance and uneven distribution in the Global South organized by the Department of Conflict & Development Studies (Ugent), Masereelfonds, Vrede VZW and the Kurdish Institute.

Introduction & discussion with:

Soraya El Kahlaoui (movie director and researcher at l’École des Hauts Études en Sciences Sociales)

Description:

In February 2014, the houses of inhabitants of Douar Ouled Dlim, in the middle of a posh quarter of Rabat, were vacated and demolished. Since then, they refuse to leave their land and resist this brutal dispossession. A moving documentary on the right to land and what it means to be a ‘citizen’ in contemporary Morocco.
