The Conundrum of Violence against Civilians in Eastern DRC (completed)
In spite of over twenty years of ongoing warfare of fluctuating intensity, there is a dearth of research on violence in eastern DRC. Moreover, there have been limited efforts to systematically collect data on incidents of violence, including on the identity and possible motives of the perpetrators. This research project intends to address this void by analysing violence against civilians committed by armed actors. It combines quantitative data on incidents of violence with qualitative data on armed groups, the army and conflict dynamics, to identify patterns of and logics behind violence against civilians.
