Academic Interests:

Steven Van Bockstael is a post-doctoral researcher, who has completed a PhD on the artisanal and small scale mining (ASM) of gold and diamonds during and after the Ivorian civil war. Prior to starting his PhD, he was a researcher at the Egmont Institute, the Belgian Royal Institute for International relations, where he researched and published on artisanal (diamond) mining and the associated security and development risks in Central and West Africa. He has also consulted on ASM-related issues and has conducted field research in the Central African Republic, Liberia, and Côte d’Ivoire, with long-term ethnographic research conducted on the latter two countries.
