Laura Luciani

Laura Luciani is a PhD fellow at the Centre for EU Studies of Ghent University, with a scholarship from the Special Fund for Research (BOF). During her studies in Slavic Languages and Literature (2010-2013) at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, she was an exchange student at Lomonosov Moscow State University. She holds a Master’s degree in Multilingual Communication for International Relations (2015) and a second Master’s degree in Political Science (2016), both from the Université Libre de Bruxelles. Before starting her PhD in March 2018, Laura volunteered at Women’s Information Center, an NGO based in Tbilisi (Georgia), and she interned at the European Commission and at the European Endowment for Democracy (Brussels). She is also a permanent editor with East Journal, an Italian online newspaper about social, political and cultural issues in Eastern Europe and beyond.

Research interests

EU’s human rights and democracy promotion, with a specific focus on the post-Soviet space; human rights NGOs; civil society in post-Soviet countries; frozen conflicts and disputed entities in the post-Soviet space; European Neighbourhood Policy, in particular the Eastern Partnership
