Dr. Sjorre Couvreur

Dr. Sjorre Couvreur is a postdoctoral researcher affiliated with the Ghent Institute for International and European Studies (GIES) and the Royal Military Academy, Belgium. He previously held a doctoral fellowship funded by the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) at GIES, where he examined the geoeconomic turn in EU trade policy, culminating in his PhD dissertation "The Trade Turn: The EU’s Arrival in a Geoeconomic World".

Sjorre's current research examines the European Union’s international economic policies (including trade, investment, and industrial policy) in an age of geoeconomics. His work analyzes how the geoeconomic turn reshapes power relations and development trajectories within and beyond the EU, with particular attention to its implications for Global South countries and to marginalized, non-Eurocentric perspectives.

He holds a Master’s degree in EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies from the College of Europe (magna cum laude) and a Master’s in International Politics from Ghent University (summa cum laude). In 2020, he was awarded the Marthe Versichelen Prize for best Master’s thesis in political sciences.
