This week, our colleague Lore Roels received the Best Presentation Award at Ghent University's Faculty of Law and Criminology Research Day 2022. Most importantly, the award includes a valorisation voucher of €1500, with which she hopes to set up a @ConversationsfromCalais-inspired poster project. Discussions on sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) are omnipresent and awareness about the issue is growing on a daily basis. At the same time, discussions on migration and the so-called ‘refugee crisis’ still too often remain stuck in a dehumanising discourse. The purpose of Lore’s valorisation project is to rehumanise ideas of SGBV in asylum contexts far beyond the walls of academia, more precisely: onto the walls of the public domain. In concrete, she wants to spread posters that translate legal reasoning in asylum procedures related to SGBV in a tangible manner. As such, she hopes to reach passers-by who would not usually get in touch with her research and the decision making involved in it. Keep an eye on the street walls!
