On Wednesday 11 October 2023, the Institute for Procedural Law and the Center for the Future of Dispute Resolution are organizing a seminar on 'The Place of Alternative Dispute Resolution in the New Cypriot Civil Justice System'.
The seminar will be held in the IRCP room (06.18.130.003) of the Faculty of Law and Criminology between 11:45 and 13:00.
Our guest speaker is Dr Nicolas Kyriakides from the University of Nicosia in Cyprus (Adjunct Faculty, Co-Director of the Procedural Law Unit).

Abstract:

The Cypriot civil justice has been in a state of crisis. This state of crisis led the Supreme Court of Cyprus, with the assistance of the European Union, to order a major review of the court with the objective to "make the administration of justice more efficient and effective."  Following the review, a further review of the civil procedure rules was led by the former Master of the Rolls and UK Supreme Court justice, Lord Dyson, which culminated in the promulgation of a new set of procedural rules ("the New Rules"). The New Rules are based on the English Civil Procedure Rules ("the English CPR"), and at their heart is the overriding objective of dealing with cases justly and at proportionate cost.   The importance of the overriding objective was emphasised by the President of the Supreme Court of Cyprus when he described it as the "fundamental philosophy of the new rules." For the first time in Cyprus's civil procedure history, alternative dispute resolution ("ADR") has been formal.
