Conference on AI in business law with transatlantic insights into financial law and intellectual property, featuring leading scholars at Ghent University.

On Friday 22 May 2026, the Ghent University Faculty of Law and Criminology is hosting the international conference “AI in Business Law: Transatlantic Perspectives in the Areas of Financial Law and IP”. The event brings together leading scholars from Belgium and Canada to explore how artificial intelligence is reshaping core areas of business law, with a particular focus on financial regulation and intellectual property. The conference opens with a morning session organized by the Financial Law Institute and devoted to AI and financial law, addressing topics such as market abuse, the EU AI Act, crypto‑asset regulation, and the potential replacement of human directors by algorithmic decision-making systems.

The afternoon session focuses on AI and intellectual property law and is co-organised with GIPLI. It examines fundamental questions at the intersection of copyright, trade marks and AI, including the future of exclusive rights versus equitable remuneration, algorithmic IP infringement, recent AI‑related music litigation settlements, and the use of AI-powered trade mark search and confusion analysis tools. With contributions from scholars of Ghent University, Université de Montréal, and other institutions, this session highlights GIPLI’s research interests in the evolving relationship between technological innovation and IP law. Participation is free of charge, subject to prior registration.

This event was made possible, in part, thanks to the support of the Flemish Government in the framework of the strategic partnership between Flanders and Quebec.
