Research stay at UAM in Managua
(20-12-2024) This month, Simon Geiregat conducted a very intensive research stay at the Universidad Americana (UAM) in Managua, Nicaragua. He gave lectures and presentations, and concluded his stay with ample space for more collaboration.
The Universidad Americana (UAM) is currently the most renown university of Nicaragua, and one of the most reputable of the Central American region. Therefore, it was an honour and a true pleasure for Prof. Geiregat to receive a heart-warming latino-style welcome in the country's capital.
The stay consisted of several landmarks. On 2 December, Prof. Geiregat gave a short presentation on an open-access research article that he had submitted to the university's Revista Científica de Estudios Sociales. On 4 December, he introduced bachelor of laws students to the field of intellectual property law (IP) through a lecture analyzing the TRIPs Agreement and its impact on Global South countries. On 12 December, he presented his preliminary conclusions on current global trends in the application of the exhaustion doctrine in IP to an academic audience. And on 14 December, he gave a pitch presentation on the challenges that artificial intelligence pose to copyright, during an international conference aimed at legal professionals.
GIPLI professor Simon Geiregat looks back at the research stay with great memories and an optimistic feeling about future collaboration. He is confident that a continuation of the Transatlantic partnership between Ghent University and UAM will yield interesting synergies in the field of research and education. He also looks forward to receiving a delegation of the Faculty of Legal Sciences, Humanities and International Relations in (less tropical but hopefully not so chilly) Ghent by May 2025.
The research stay spanned from 2 to 19 December 2024, and was made possible thanks to an "explore & valorize" project granted by the Ghent University Global Minds Fund and VLIRUOS.
