Carl Vander Maelen won the BILETA Prize for Best Postgraduate Paper at the 2019 BILETA Conference

(23-04-2019) On 16 April 2019, Carl Vander Maelen - member of the Research group Law & Technology won the BILETA Prize for Best Postgraduate Paper at the 2019 BILETA Conference in Belfast.

His paper ‘Opt-In or Obligation? Regulating Globally Operating Tech Companies through Alternative Regulatory Instruments’ discusses how alternative forms of governance such as self-regulation and co-regulation can regulate tech companies. Materially, he discussed the advantages of using these flexible tools in the complex, rapidly-evolving tech industry. Territorially, however, he warned for a new trend whereby soft law instruments are ‘hardened’ and risk complicating the cross-border application of codes of conduct.

The award was presented to Carl by the Executive Committee of BILETA and included a cash prize of 250 pounds.
