Study or research in the USA via Fulbright

The prestigious scholarship of the Fulbright Commission for Educational Exchange between the United States of America, Belgium and Luxembourg helps finance studies or research at top universities in the US. The scholarships are open to all academic disciplines and are awarded on the basis of competitive selection.

Depending on the Fulbright scholarship, you must have the Belgian, Luxembourg or European nationality. Candidates with other nationalities should contact the Fulbright Commission in their country of origin. Fulbright is active in about 150 countries.

The Fulbright offer

  • Scholarships for master’s studies for Belgians or Luxembourgers
  • Scholarships for (pre)doctoral or post-doctoral research or lecturing for Belgians or Luxembourgers
  • Travel and accommodation for Teaching Assistants Programme (French, German, English, Dutch) for Belgians
  • Scholarships for EU citizens: Fulbright Schumann Programme for (pre)doctoral or post-doctoral research related to EU affairs or the US-EU Transatlantic Agenda
  • Fulbright always offers J1 visa sponsoring and health insurance for the scholarships
  • Fulbright also offers scholarships for US citizens and institutions from the US for study or research in Belgium and Luxembourgh; info and conditions.

Requirements

  • Meeting the nationality requirements, depending on the scholarship: Belgian, Luxembourg or EU nationality
  • Very good command of the English language
  • Min. BA degree (or to be obtained the year of the application) or other degree, depending on the scholarship applied for
  • Being able to demonstrate excellent study results (great distinction or multiple distinction) and/or other personal merits
  • Obtaining admission into US universities on time
  • Additional specific conditions depend on the type of Fulbright scholarship. More information and FAQ can be found on the Fulbright website.

Application procedure

The application file contains:

  • an American CV
  • a carefully substantiated research or study proposal (personal statement) (including why study/conduct research in the US; what are your expectations?)
  • scoring list and diplomas
  • letters of recommendation
  • letters of admission from US institutions.

You can apply from 15 September until 1 December (12 noon CET) Always check the deadline on the Fulbright website.

Parallel with the scholarship application you start up the applications for admission to the American institution on time.

Applying to a foreign university can take several months. So it is best not to postpone your information search and application for admission at the foreign university(s) and take deadlines into account.
