A legacy as a catalyst for treating peritoneal cancer
(27-10-2022) Not many people know about it: peritoneal cancer. The disease affects a lot of patients. Existing treatments barely catch on, but thanks to a patient's legacy, Professor Wim Ceelen is conducting pioneering research into new treatments.
Six years ago, that patient, together with Professor Wim Ceelen, cancer researcher and gastrointestinal surgeon, founded the Ghent University Peritoneal Cancer Fund with one goal: to include the fund in his will. "Donations are very important to us. If they were to disappear, we would run into problems for certain expenses, and then our research would be compromised," Wim says.
