Postdocs on Tour: Careers Outside Academia 2016

“Go to events, make connections with your peers!”. This was one of the important advices that employers gave to postdocs in the successful Postdoc Community debate Jobs for Postdocs Outside Academia. What are Employers Looking for? (December 3rd, 2015). Unfortunately, it was clear that self-marketing of many postdocs to potential employers is not always their greatest talent …

We offer a new opportunity for postdocs to network with many interesting people and to advance insights and develop strategies of how to self-market yourself on the job market.

Come and join us for our second Postdocs on Tour session focusing on the wider horizon of postdocs: employment outside of academia.

  • When? Tuesday March 15th, 2016 from 10 am until noon
  • What? What are your options beyond the academic career path? What are the advantages - and disadvantages - of a PhD degree on the job market? And what should you do to ensure a successful career after your postdoc?

Four former postdocs will share their experiences, challenges, and advice on finding a job outside of academia:

  • David Lesthaeghe, PhD in Engineering, and now European Patent Attorney at De Clercq & Partners;
  • Marleen De Bolle, PhD in Psychology, and now Consultant Public Sector at Hudson;
  • Bart Ooghe, PhD in Historical Geography, and now Communications Manager at Museum Van Schone Kunsten;
  • Ann Van Gysel, PhD in Biotechnology, and now CEO of Turnstone and Founder and Owner of multiple companies;

“The most fertile source of insight is hindsight…”. So come and listen to these postdocs’ advice for you, take this chance to enter in discussion with them and your fellow postdocs about career options outside of academia.

Sandwiches and drinks will be provided, and afterwards there is ample opportunity to meet and talk to other Ghent University postdocs.
