UGent scores well in the number of patent applications

(12-03-2018) In 2017, the European Patent Office (EPO) registered 2,155 patent applications from Belgium.

This is a slight decrease after the record year 2016, but still more than in 2015 (2.041) and the second highest number of the past ten years.

The number of patent applications in Belgium rose most strongly in optics (+39.1 %) and medical technology (+31.5 %).

Flanders accounts for 64.2 % of all Belgian patent applications, followed by Wallonia (19.6 %) and the Brussels-Capital Region (16.2 %).

Solvay was the most active Belgian applicant at EPO with 355 patent applications (+32%), followed by imec, Umicore and Melexis. Ghent University is seventh with 40 applications. Still in the top ten are the VIB (5th place) and the KU Leuven (10th place).
