Meet the VEG-i-TEC researcher: Thijs van Arnhem

(16-06-2026) Thijs is a working on the VALORAGRO project. With a background in Biochemical Engineering Technology and Pharmaceutical Engineering, he is passionate about biotechnology, fermentation and sustainable innovation.

🌱 In VALORAGRO, Thijs investigates how fruit, vegetable and other plant-based side streams can be transformed through fermentation into safe and nutritious feed ingredients for pigs and poultry. By improving the nutritional value, safety and digestibility of these underutilized biomass streams, the project aims to help farmers close nutrient cycles and reduce food waste.

♻️ Towards a more circular agricultural system

VALORAGRO brings together researchers, farmers and stakeholders from across Europe to explore practical solutions for agroecological farming systems. Through a Living Lab approach, the project develops and tests innovative feeding strategies based on locally available biomass streams, contributing to improved sustainability, animal health and resource efficiency.

🤝 The project is coordinated by ILVO and involves partners besides Ghent University from Utrecht University, INRAE, the Thünen Institute, BioForum, Caring Farmers and itab.
