Ella Schoolaert

Position: doctoral researcherElla Schoolaert

Biography:

Ir. Ella Schoolaert (1992) graduated from the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at the Ghent University (Belgium) in 2015 as a master of science in sustainable materials engineering with a major in polymers and fiber structures. She started her Ph.D. under the supervision of Prof. Karen De Clerck (Centre for Textile Science and Engineering) and Prof. Richard Hoogenboom (Supramolecular Chemistry) and obtained an FWO Strategic Basic Research grant in 2016.

Research project:

Ella's research project is about the design of optical nanofibrous sensors that responds to stimuli in the environment by a visual, optic change. Poly(2-oxazoline)s are either chemically or physically functionalized with stimuli-sensitive dyes and consequently processed into nanofibres by the solvent electrospinning process. Thanks to the unique combination of the polymer properties and nanofibrous characteristics, these sensors show potential in many application fields including biomedicine and safety.
