7th world-wide meeting of the ultrasonics community in Bruges, Belgium

The ICU Congresses aim to bring together professionals and experts from academia and industry in all disciplines of ultrasonics, covering fundamental science as well as applications in the field of engineering material characterization and quality inspection, chemical and biological US based monitoring, medical imaging and therapy, etc. The ICU meetings provide a valuable and unique opportunity for participants to exchange their achievements and experience in view of addressing present-day challenges as well as to enlarge their international contacts on the field.

Our colleague Simon Michels will talk about "The thermal fingerprint of an ultrasonic beam: cheap and fast visualization".

ESTE19, this September in Poland.

The conference is devoted to all aspects of luminescence and luminescent materials. Novel fabrication technologies and techniques, studies of broadly understood optical properties of materials – single crystals, powders, sintered ceramics, nanostructures, glasses, amorphous systems – will be covered. State of the art of theoretical fundamental and applied research will be presented.

During the presentation "Infrared charge transfer luminescence in Eu-Tb co-doped sulfides" dr. Jonas Joos from LumiLab will talk about his relativistic ab initio calculations and the insight they provide in the experimental results.

Conference on photonic materials and devices, held in Nice (France) from 4 to 6 September.

The Photoluminescence in Rare Earths: Photonic Materials and Devices (PRE) workshop aims to provide a global forum for material scientists, chemists and physicists to discuss and debate the state of the art and future perspectives of rare earth based materials for optoelectronic and photonic applications. Fundamental aspects, properties, and applications of photoluminescent materials are considered.

LumiLab will be represented by prof. dr. Philippe Smet, with a plenary lecture on "Non-luminescent defects in solids: enemies or friends?", and dr. Jonas Joos who will give a talk about "Evidence for intervalence charge-transfer (IVCT) states in Eu-doped phosphors".
