Conference on photonic materials and devices, held in Nice (France) from 4 to 6 September.

The Photoluminescence in Rare Earths: Photonic Materials and Devices (PRE) workshop aims to provide a global forum for material scientists, chemists and physicists to discuss and debate the state of the art and future perspectives of rare earth based materials for optoelectronic and photonic applications. Fundamental aspects, properties, and applications of photoluminescent materials are considered.

LumiLab will be represented by prof. dr. Philippe Smet, with a plenary lecture on "Non-luminescent defects in solids: enemies or friends?", and dr. Jonas Joos who will give a talk about "Evidence for intervalence charge-transfer (IVCT) states in Eu-doped phosphors".

SACPM2019

The purpose of the conference is to bring together local and international scientists  who are working on various issues related to photonic materials. Following on the success of seven previous conferences in the series 'Kariega 2019' will take the same general format. In particular, the conference will focus primarily (but not exclusively) on the following material systems:

  • III-nitrides such as GaN, AlGaN, InGaN, etc
  • ZnO and other wide gap materials
  • materials for photovoltaic applications, thermal photovoltaics etc
  • biophotonic contibutions
  • narrow gap materials for mid-infrared applications
  • photonic crystals for fibre applications
  • phosphors
  • nano-materials for photonic applications
  • novel photonic materials (including polymers)

Materials related issues that would fall well within the scope of the conference are the following:

  • crystal growth and epitaxy
  • characterisation (photoluminescence, DLTS, IR spectroscopy, etc.)
  • defect related studies
  • process related issues
  • modelling of materials
  • opto-electronic devices (novel structures, etc.)
  • device modelling and characterisation

A group of international speakers, all experts in their fields, will present invited lectures on topics related to the theme of the conference. The scientific programme will also include a number of oral presentations selected from submitted abstracts, as well as poster presentations. Ample time will be available for the discussion of research results. As the number of delegates will be limited to less than 100, it is hoped that the conference will encourage much interaction, especially between local and international delegates.

Prof. Eduardo Yukihara (Paul Scherrer Institute and Oklahoma State University) will talk about materials and methods for radiation dosimetry.

Research on optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) of artificial materials has transformed the field of passive radiation dosimetry in the last 25 years. Today OSL is commercially used in personal radiation dosimetry in several continents, and active research is carried out worldwide on the underlying trapping and recombination processes of commercial luminescence materials and on the development new materials.

In addition to personal and environmental dosimetry, OSL dosimetry also plays a role in quality assurance in medical applications (diagnostic radiology and radiation therapy) and space dosimetry.

In this talk we will provide a personal perspective of the advances achieved in field in the last quarter of a century, from the development of Al2O3:C and the identification of BeO as dosimeters in the 90’s, until the development of new luminescence materials with properties tailored for OSL dosimetry and new applications.
