Sustainable Construction One Step Closer
(01-10-2025) In October 2024, the student team Charbuild won second place in the Bio-based Innovation Student Challenge Europe (BISC-E), a European student competition that promotes entrepreneurship.
The aim of BISC-E is to raise awareness among student entrepreneurs and actively involve them in the transition towards a bio-based economy.
In their proposal, the Ghent University bioscience engineering students combined biochar with cement, valorizing waste while making concrete production more sustainable. The biochar is obtained through the pyrolysis of used coffee grounds, mixed with cement, and results in stronger concrete! Moreover, the energy released during pyrolysis reduces the fuel demand of cement kilns by 50%.
