Determination of hydraulic soil parameters through a combination of remote sensing and hydrologic modeling

Funded by: Bijzonder Onderzoeksfonds (Ghent University)
Personnel: Els De Lathauwer
Promotor: Valentijn Pauwels

The main objective of this project is to develop a methodology to retrieve spatially distributed soil physical parameter values using a combination of remote sensing and hydrologic modeling. This project is performed in association with five partners, where every group focuses on a specific topic:

  • The Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR), the Lüdwig-Maximillians University of München (LMU) and the Istituto di Studi sui Sistemi Intelligenti per l’ Automazzione (ISSIA) are responsible for the determination of the remotely sensed soil moisture values.
  • The Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU) is responsible for the investigation of the crop properties.
  • The Laboratory of Hydrology and Water Management (LHWM) of Ghent University focuses on the integration of the remote sensing data in hydrologic models.
This project fully utilizes the unique data set of the AGRISAR 2006 project, which was funded by the European Space Agency (ESA).
