Athraa obtained a joint master’s degree in biology from the University of Florence and VUB, where her thesis focused on microbial bioplastic polymer production. She has over three years of industry research experience working on European projects focused on the environmental fate of plastics, through laboratory and pilot-scale experiments, as well as translating experimental findings into sustainability assessments. In January 2026, she began her PhD research on microplastic biodegradation under the supervision of Prof. Stefaan De Neve.
