Rens completed an MSc in Biochemical Engineering Technologies at Ghent University and an MSc in Earth Sciences at Utrecht University. His MSc thesis focused on exploring alternative anaerobic methane oxidation pathways in the seasonally hypoxic Lake Grevelingen (The Netherlands). After working for two years as a decarbonization consultant, he began a PhD at SoFer in January 2025 , researching nitrous oxide emissions from Flemish agricultural soils under the supervision of Prof. Steven Sleutel.
