Prof. dr. Catharina De Schauwer
Catharina De Schauwer obtained her degree in Veterinary Medicine in 2004. Following an internship in ambulatory practice, she was appointed as an assistant at the Department of Reproduction, Obstetrics and Herd Health, where she combined clinical work in large animal reproduction with doctoral research. Her PhD focused on the isolation of mesenchymal stem cells from equine umbilical cord blood, which she successfully defended in 2012.
In the same year, she obtained the postgraduate qualification Certified Equine Veterinarian, followed by the European specialist diploma in Equine Reproduction (ECAR) in 2014.
After completing her PhD, she transitioned fully to research and supported several PhD students, focusing on in vitro embryo production in cattle and horses.
Since October 2018, she has been appointed as a full-time Professor of Veterinary Physiology. She coordinates the course Physiology and Pathophysiology I and leads the Veterinary Stem Cell Research Unit. In addition, she actively contributes to faculty governance through her roles in research, innovation and welfare committees.
