Sofie Sergaent

Sofie Sergeant (1975) has an MD in Disability Studies (UGent) and a BA in Dance - Movement - Expression (Fontys Hogeschool Tilburg). She has been working for years both with and for people with intellectual disabilities, first at Oranje (Bruges), and later at education centre Handicum (Ghent). Since 2012, Sofie lives in Berlin with her family, where she works as a (long-distance) university assistant for the Department of Special Education at UGent. In addition, she continues to serve as a creative and content-related source of inspiration for Handicum.

Themes: nonverbal communication, working with image books, talking with people with mental disabilities about delicate or difficult themes like dementia, illness and death, alcohol and drug abuse. My proposition (which also serves as the basis for my PhD) is that visual materials are essential to communicate successfully with people with intellectual disabilities.

Selected publications

Sofie Sergeant created together with Saar De Buysere two image books titled `Dingske` (`Thingie`) and `Nu en Straks` (`Now and Next`), which comes with a manual and a personal exercise book. `Dingske` was published in 2010 and `Nu en straks` in 2013, both by Garant, a Belgian publishing house. The (book's) illustrations show in `Dingske` a woman dealing with dementia and in `Nu en straks` a woman going through the palliative process.
