Anke Vander Elst
Anke Vander Elst obtained her Master of Laws degree in 2022 at Ghent University.
Since 2023, she has been working on a joint PhD at Ghent University and Hasselt University, under the supervision of Professor Gerd Verschelden (UGent) and Professor Tim Wuyts (UHasselt).
Her doctoral research is entitled: “Recovery of social welfare payments through family maintenance: evaluation and optimisation”. The PCSW (Public Centre for Social Welfare) is obliged, to a certain extent, to recover the costs of social services and living allowances from family members of beneficiaries who are required to pay maintenance. This research aims to identify shortcomings in the existing legislation and to formulate proposals for its optimisation.
The research is part of the FWO‑SBO project “Family Solidarity 2.0: towards renewed solidarity in diverse families”, which investigates what contemporary solidarity in complex families looks like, what its challenges are, and how it can be fostered.
