Marie Spinoy

Marie Spinoy (she/her) is a researcher in anti-discrimination law and a teaching assistant at the Centre for Law, Families and Diversity at Ghent University. Through her research and teaching, she has developed in-depth knowledge of this area of ​​law. She also specializes in the rights of persons with disabilities and the requirements of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. In both areas, she has advised governments, legislators, and other stakeholders, including on a comprehensive evaluation of the Flemish Equal Opportunities Decree. Since October 2023, she has been a member of the Litigation Chamber of the Flemish Human Rights Institute, where she adjudicates on discrimination complaints.

Marie graduated with a research master's degree from the Leuven Law Faculty in collaboration with Tilburg University (2015-2017). During this master's program, she spent an exchange semester at Duke Law School (James S. Bidlake Memorial Award). After her master's degree, she obtained her Magister Juris (MJur, 2017-2018) from Oxford University. There, she was also a convenor of the Oxford Public Law Discussion Group and collaborated on various Oxford Pro Bono Publico projects.

In addition to her position at Ghent University, she is also affiliated with the Leuven Centre for Public Law (KU Leuven), where she is preparing a dissertation in anti-discrimination law. In the 2023-2024 academic year, she taught Discrimination Law as a substitute lecturer at KU Leuven.

Marie has a particular interest in the (potential) interaction between law and disability studies. Finally, she has also developed expertise in feminist and queer research methods in law.
