On 19th of March 2024 the Ghent Institute of Legal History will host the workshop titled ‘Law, Culture, History: How to Compare Now’, welcoming interventions from Professor Pierre Legrand (Sorbonne School of Law/ Northwestern University) and Dr Alexandra Mercescu (West University of Timisoara).

The workshop will explore current methodologies of legal comparison and provide the needed epistemic basis for the groundwork of the ERC-Consolidator Grant project EMERGE 101087876, Rethinking Emergency from a Legal Historical Perspective: Contexts, Law, Actors, in accordance with its intellectual commitment in fostering an epistemology sensitive to cultural difference and context.

Furthermore, by means of a guest lecture as a part of the Legal Systems of the World module within the LLM International and National Legal Orders, it aims to bring together colleagues, researchers and postgraduate students with an interest in contemporary comparative law. As such, it serves as an inaugural workshop of a series reuniting experts and members of the team, with the goal of strengthening and enhancing comparative legal knowledge specifically related to constitutional law and history.

The proceedings will take place from 10 am to 4 pm in the Faculty Board Room. The schedule includes a short presentation of the EMERGE project, followed by presentations from team members and interventions by distinguished guests. The afternoon will feature guest lectures and a Q&A session (12h-2h30pm), as well as concluding session.

There is no registration needed and colleagues and postgraduate students are warmly welcome to take part in the event. Sandwiches will be available for lunch.
