(28-06-2023) From 19-23 June 2023, Law & Technology researcher Pieterjan Declerck attended the Digital Games Research Association (DiGRA) annual Conference in Sevilla, Spain.

DiGRA is an international association of academics and scholars who research digital games and associated phenomena.

For the conference, Pieterjan organized a panel together with Bruno Dupont, project manager of the ‘Gam(e)(a)ble’ project on the blurring lines between videogaming and gambling and their impact on children. The panel focused on the interdisciplinary approach to videogame monetization and included presentations from multiple perspectives: social sciences, media studies, law and prevention.
Pieterjan’s presentation focused on consumer protection perspectives on gambling-like elements in videogames. More specifically, he discussed the potential of the consumer protection framework to protect vulnerable consumers against the risks associated with gambling-like elements in videogames such as lootboxes or social casino games.
