João Geirinhas specializes in meteorology, climate change and dynamics, extreme weather events and impacts.

Bio

João Geirinhas

After a master’s degree in Geophysical Sciences (with specialization in Meteorology) at the University of Lisbon, I worked for two years as a researcher fellow at the Instituto Dom Luiz. In 2020, I started my PhD in Geophysical Sciences in a collaboration between the University of Lisbon, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and the University of Ghent. My research interests are focused on the analysis of climate extremes, namely compound droughts and heatwaves, their natural and socio-economic impacts and how they are influenced by climate change and dynamics. During my time as a PhD candidate I had the opportunity to collaborate with several research teams and participate in different projects (e.g. DHEFEUS) focused on exploring this thematic for South America. Currently, as a postdoctoral researcher in the H-CEL team, I continue to work on this topic with the aim of exploring how climate change might modulate the atmospheric and land–atmosphere mechanisms associated with these climate extremes.
