Research focus
Mirko Petrovic is a senior full professor emeritus of geriatrics and clinical pharmacology at Ghent University. His work focuses on pharmaco‑epidemiology and geriatric pharmacotherapy, particularly the patterns, quality and appropriateness of medication use in frail, polymedicated older adults—hospitalised patients and nursing‑home residents. He investigates how institutional organization affects prescription practices and uses prescribing indicators to identify deviations from guidelines, aiming to optimize medication policies for older adults.
With large experience and expertise in epidemiological studies and clinical trials, Mirko Petrovic co‑led major European studies, including the FP7 MID_FRAIL trial and SENATOR software trial, takes part in the H2020 AFFIRMO trial on atrial fibrillation in multimorbid older patients, and engages in projects addressing medication management and dysphagia formulation.
He also contributes to medication self‑management research, developing Delphi‑based recommendations for polypharmacy support. Through this multifaceted approach, he strives to enhance safe, tailored medication use and improve health outcomes in older populations. He currently serves as Chair of the Ghent University Hospital / Ghent University Ethics Committee.
