Research focus

Sofie Van Hoecke is professor at IDLab, Ghent University-imec, and leading the PreDiCT research team (http://predict.idlab.ugent.be), funded through Flemish, national and European industry-driven and fundamental projects. Her team’s specialties are: (multi-modal) machine learning and hybrid AI where machine learning is fused with semantic technologies, user feedback and/or physical models, applied in predictive maintenance and healthcare applications. The team contributes to the design of innovative solutions to address challenges in health and maintenance that have a positive impact on society.

Within this scope, the team conducts research on hybrid AI approaches that integrate pharmacokinetic modelling with machine learning, enabling more trustworthy and clinically meaningful decision-support systems. In addition, the research focuses on the design of personalized and individualized treatment strategies. Finally, their research on real-world evidence frameworks, leveraging data from wearables and smartphone sensors, supports continuous monitoring, early detection of events, interventions, patient empowerment, and evidence generation in real-life clinical settings.
