Research Focus
Prof. Dr. Tine De Backer, MD, PhD is a full professor of cardiology and clinical pharmacology at Ghent University and Head of Clinic at the Department of Cardiology of Ghent University Hospital (UZ Ghent). She trained as a cardiologist and angiologist at Ghent University and UZ Ghent and gained international experience at the Thoraxcenter Rotterdam and the Cardiovascular Research Foundation in New York.
Her clinical and research work focuses on vascular diseases, resistant hypertension, and cardiovascular ultrasound imaging, with a strong emphasis on pharmacological treatment strategies. She obtained her PhD with a thesis on the pharmacological symptomatic treatment of intermittent claudication, exploring both established and emerging therapies. As a certified clinical pharmacologist and active member of the Heymans Institute of Pharmacology, she integrates cardiovascular medicine with clinical pharmacology to optimize evidence-based patient care.
Prof. De Backer is President of the Belgian Hypertension Committee and is actively involved in national and international scientific societies, including the Belgian Society of Cardiology, the European Society of Cardiology (FESC), the European Society of Hypertension, the European Society of Vascular Medicine, the Cochrane Collaboration, and the Dutch Association for Clinical Pharmacology. She serves as a jury member of the Galenus Prize.
In addition to her academic and clinical roles, she regularly reviews manuscripts for national and international peer-reviewed journals and evaluates abstracts for scientific societies. Through her combined expertise in cardiology, vascular medicine, and clinical pharmacology, she aims to advance personalized cardiovascular care and improve outcomes for patients with complex cardiovascular and hypertensive disorders.
