About veterinary epidemiology
Veterinary epidemiology focuses on the description and analysis of disease within a population. This means that veterinary epidemiologists look at the effect and the development of disease in a population to better understand the origin, the transmission,… of that disease. In this way, epidemiology contributes especially to preventive veterinary medicine.
As some diseases are transferable from animals to humans (=zoonoses), veterinary epidemiology can be active within a One-Health concept where humans, animals and the environment are seen as a dynamic and interactive complex. Because of this there is also a strong connection with other disciplines. On one hand veterinary public health, that focuses on how zoonoses can be prevented. On the other hand the economy of animal health care that looks into the economic consequences of animal disease and its prevention.
