Estimating lifetimes of engineering polymers and friction materials by means of applying heavy loads and low sliding velocities on large scale samples.

Features:

  • Load or displacement controlled operation.
  • Two testing pairs tested simultaneously.
  • Varying load with varying amplitude up to 2500kN (friction load) and 6500kN (Normal load).
  • Environmental conditioning to control temperature, humidity and corrosion environment. Counterface cooling (-40°C) or heating (+100°C).
  • The sliding contact zone can be immersed in a water reservoir wherein additions of sand particles or sludge are simulated to provide third body abrasive wear.
  • Sample size between 30x30x10mm² and 300x220x40mm³.
  • Counterface dimensions between 200x80x30mm³ and 520x320x70mm³.
  • Customization upon request

  • Study the feasibility of a surge barrier (Maeslantkering in The Netherlands).
  • Tests on sliding bearings for the largest observation wheel. (AIN Dubai observation wheel)
  • used for material selection in (under-water, lubricated or dry conditions) of running bearings, train bogies, … .
  • Tests of self-lubricating bearing materials used in offshore technique.

Objective:

Large-scale tests on friction and wear of engineering polymers and friction materials provide a useful tool to estimate their real lifetimes, working under heavy loads and low sliding velocities. The influence of elastic deformations, creep or overload situations can be taken into account more precisely compared to conventional small-scale tribo-testing, while also edge effects and stress concentrations are reduced. Moreover, the move-ability of the generated wear debris or the influence of third bodies into the contact zone is simulated more effectively
