Slag property measurements

Whether you are designing a new pyrometallurgical furnace or whether you aim to optimize an existing one, knowledge of your slag and its properties is of the essence. Our lab can give insights in slag properties using both experimental techniques and simulations .

Slag viscosity

Slag viscosity is an essential property for furnace tapping, metal droplet settling and slag foaming. Our lab has a high temperature viscometer/rheometer available that can operate up to 1600 °C in both air and other atmospheres (gas tight).

Slag density

Slag density plays a role in metal droplet settling as well as in dimensioning the volume of a furnace. In our lab, this property can be measured simultaneously with viscosity measurements in a  high temperature viscometer/rheometer.

Slag electrical conductivity

Slag electrical conduction is crucial for the operation of electric furnaces (ESF, EAF) as it governs heat generation (Joule heating) and arc stability. Our four electrode electrical conductivity set-up can work up to 1600 °C in air and other atmospheres.

Slag electronic transference numbers

To design metal production via electrolysis, such as Molten Oxide Electrolysis (MOE), it is crucial to estimate the efficiency of your cell. Electronic transference numbers are crucial for this, as this is the ratio of electronic conduction over the total conduction, and represents the portion of electricity lost to electron hopping instead of electrons that can be used for the electrolysis reaction. This property is also measured in our four electrode electrical conductivity set-up.

Slag thermal conduction

Understanding your furnace’s temperature profile is crucial for both design and operation. Therefore, on has to know the slag’s heat transfer which is related to the slag’s thermal conductivity. Our lab has a hot-wire probe set-up that can measure slag thermal conductivity for temperatures up to 1600 °C in air.
