Simultaneous Thermal Analysis & Mass Spectrometry (STA-MS)
An STA combines two experimental techniques, Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), in a single device. TGA is used to investigate the decomposition of materials via recording the sample mass as a function of time/temperature. With the coupled MS it is possible to obtain simultaneous knowledge of which decomposition products are formed. Typical applications are the decomposition of polymer/natural materials as alternative reductantia.
DSC is used to investigate phase transitions of materials, their phase transition enthalpy and a material’s heat capacity in a certain phase. Typical applications can be the melting/crystallization temperature of slags, phase transformations in metals/polymers.
Muffle furnace
A muffle furnace can be used to heat up materials according to a certain temperature profile. The furnace can reach a temperature of 1400 °C and operates in an air atmosphere. It has been used to perform heat treatments, calcination of concrete and melting of the metals for the heat resistance of textiles.
