Gilles de Meester graduated as Master in Pharmaceutical Sciences (Drug Development) at Ghent University in June 2020. He is working as a PhD student at the LPM since January 2021, and is granted a PhD scholarship by the Special Research Fund of Ghent University (BOF, Bijzonder Onderzoeksfonds).

He focuses on the epigenetic regulation of gene expression in Burkholderia cenocepacia. DNA methyltransferases (MTases) are believed to be involved in many physiological processes that occur in prokaryotes, such as DNA mismatch repair, replication initiation and transcription. The main purpose of his research is to obtain fundamental insights into the exact function of specific DNA MTases and their potential role in the decreased antimicrobial susceptibility in bacterial biofilms.

For his work, Ian uses Next Generation Sequencing (NGS)  and Single Molecule Real-Time Sequencing (SMRT) to determine chraracteristic methylation patterns in the B. cenocepacia genome. Secondly, several specific DNA MTases are targeted to evaluate the influence on the bacterial phenotype. Expression of these DNA MTases (by RNA seuquencing), and subsequently the manipulation of gene expression (by creating gene deletion mutants), will give insights in the importance of the gene in a defined setting or condition. Finally, potential DNA MTase inhibitors will be included in his research to evaluate antimicrobial activity against bacterial biofilms.
