While an increase in antimicrobial resistance occurred over the last 20 years, a decline in antibacterial drug development has been observed. Therefore an alternative approach for antimicrobial chemotherapy was investigated, namely targeting the bacterial communication system, also known as quorum sensing (QS).
Since QS is involved in the coordination of virulence and biofilm formation and/or maturation, QS systems are considered as a target for development of novel antimicrobial agents.
Previous research in the LPM showed that QSI can weaken the bacterial biofilm and thereby increase the susceptibility of these biofilms towards antibiotics. However, the exact mechanism by which these QSI exert these effects have not ben elucidated yet.
The aim of this research is to discover this mechanism of action.
