TITLE

New insights in stem cell differentiation

SUMMARY

The hallmarks of stem cells are their unlimited self-renewal capacity and the potential of generating multiple cell types. Because of the numerous possible applications in regenerative medicine and cancer therapies the latter characteristic entails, stem cell research keeps gaining importance.

However, a major limitation of this research remains the spontaneous in vitro differentiation of stem cells, of which the underlying mechanism is not well understood. Obtaining new insight in this mechanism and in the pluripotency of stem cells, will lead to new opportunities in stem cell research. This research will focus on the importance of epigenetic regulation in the differentiation process of stem cells.
