Georges Martyn

Georges Martyn (°1966 in Avelgem, B) studied law and medieval studies in Kortrijk and Leuven.

In 1996 he defended his PhD thesis on early modern private law legislation in the Southern Netherlands.

He is married to An Clarysse and father of Lander and Klaas. From 1992 to 2008 he was ‘advocaat’ (attorney/barrister). Since 1999 he teaches legal history, legal methodology and general introduction to law at Ghent University.

He is also a substitute magistrate (justice of the peace). His main fields of research are the history of the legal professions, historical legal iconology, early modern private and public law and luso-belgo-brazilian relations.
