Explore new avenues in fundamental technical research through collaboration opportunities from US office of Naval Research (ONR) Global

(02-02-2024) The US Office of Naval Research Global invites collaboration in fundamental technical research, spanning diverse fields and offering sponsorship programs to address naval challenges through innovative initiatives.

We are thrilled to share an exciting opportunity that has come our way. The US Office of Naval Research (ONR) Global has reached out to us for potential collaboration, opening doors to an array of possibilities in fundamental technical research.

ONR Global, an international organization, is actively seeking partnerships across various areas of research to address naval challenges, spanning a wide range of fields such as AI, environmental studies, materials science, chemistry and more. Their commitment to advancing basic research is reflected in their sponsorship programs, which include exchange visits, conferences, workshops, and seed funding. This collaboration presents a unique chance to contribute to cutting-edge research with global implications.

Here are some key mechanisms through which you can engage with ONR Global:

Visiting Scientists Program

  • Supports short-term travel opportunities for foreign/international scientists to the United States.

Aims to socialize new Science & Technology (S&T) ideas or findings with the Naval Research Enterprise (NRE) to advance basic research through collaboration.

Collaborative Science Program

Provides financial support for foreign or international workshops, conferences, and seminars of naval interest.

Research Grants

  • Offers direct research support to international scientists to address naval S&T challenges.

Facilitates the insertion of innovative, international S&T into core ONR and Naval Research Enterprise Programs.

Good to know

  • ONR Global's focus is on funding fundamental research, and their structure differs from a typical grant, meaning there is no obligation for specific outputs.
  • The IP of the research results in the programme relevant to us will remain with Ghent University.
  • IT is not necessary but adviced to contact the Committee on Human Rights Policy and Dual Use Research (CMDUO).

Given the extensive range of research interests covered by ONR Global, this collaboration holds great potential for many of our researchers. Go to the ONR global website to find additional information on their research interests. We encourage you to review the details and inform the EU-Team (incl. hyperlink) if any researchers express interest.

Should there be interest from your team, the EU-team and the North America Platform can coordinate a meeting to explore this collaboration further. Representatives from ONR Global's international team are available for in-depth discussions to align our goals and initiatives.

This is a remarkable opportunity for us to contribute to global advancements in fundamental research. Let's seize the potential and embark on this exciting journey together.
