After her return, she started working as an independent clinical psychologist in addition to her employment as a psychopedagogical consultant within the Center for Student Counseling (CLB).

Since 2019, Athina is a doctoral fellow on the FWO Odysseus research project of dr. Olivier F. Colins. This research attempts to assign the heterogeneous group of 16- and 17-year-old boys who have been send to a criminal justice institution to more homogeneous subgroups and to investigate whether and how these groups differ from school going boys. Various methods and techniques will be used for this, such as questionnaires, diagnostic interviews, psychophysiological parameters, experiments, and file information. For her PhD, Athina focuses on the relationship between emotions and personality traits within these homogeneous subgroups. In addition to her PhD, Athina is following a "Master in Criminology" at the Catholic University of Leuven (2020-2022).
