Eduard Cuelenaere is postdoctoral researcher at Ghent University's Centre for Cinema and Media Studies (CIMS) and visiting professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Media, Culture & Politics / ECHO). He holds a joint PhD in Communication Sciences (Ghent University) and Theatre Studies and Intermediality (University of Antwerp). He teaches film and audiovisual media, media and cultural production, adaptation studies, and several other courses.
As a film and media scholar, he studies how recycled content such as remakes, sequels, and franchise extensions reflects the changing state of film cultures and industries, with a particular focus on European cinema and the growing role of streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+. His current FWO-funded project examines platformized nationalism. He works across film studies, cultural studies and (critical) media industry studies, and his work has appeared in journals such as Media, Culture & Society.
Eduard is vice-chair of ECREA's Film Studies section, co-chair of NeFCA's Popular Media and Culture section, and a member of the editorial board of Studies in European Cinema. He is also an associate member of HOLLYWOOD MEMORIES. Outside academia, he programmes films for Film-Plateau (Ghent University's film club) and co-founded the Ghent cinephile platform Kinoautomat, where he was previously editor-in-chief.
