Borrowing

For whom?

Students: All students of Ghent University and the Ghent University Association (University College Ghent, Artevelde University College, University College West Flanders) can borrow items from the library collection on law for a period of four weeks. The loan period can be renewed up to three times.

Visitors: All other visitors can register as a library patron upon presenting their identity card. For a fee of 15 euros a visitor's card will be issued, which is valid for a year. Visitors can then borrow the library collection on law for a period of four weeks. The loan period can be renewed up to three times.

Both students and visitors can borrow the library collection on criminology for a longer period of time. Those items can be borrowed for a period of four weeks. In addition, up to three renewals of the loan period can be requested through lib.ugent.be. Renewing is not possible if another patron has requested the item in the meantime. A library card is required in order to borrow items from the library’s collection on criminology.

Faculty and staff: All faculty and staff of Ghent University and the Ghent University Association (University College Ghent, Artevelde University College, University College West Flanders) can borrow ten items from the entire library collection for a period of four weeks. Up to three renewals of the loan period can be requested before the end of the period through rbib@mail.ugent.be. Renewing is not possible if another patron has requested the item in the meantime.

Loan desks

In the faculty library the two library information and loan desks (desk Room Universiteitstraat and desk Domed Room) are open from Monday till Friday during the opening hours of the library. Books from the collection can be borrowed at the loan desk in the Domed Room.

Overdue notices

When an item is not returned by the end of the borrowing period, patrons will receive several reminders through email at intervals.

If the item still has not been returned after that, the patron’s record will be handed over to the Legal Office at Ghent University. The Legal Office will then follow up on retrieving the item, if need be by means of legal proceedings, with charges payable by the patron.

Patrons have to pay for any damage to or loss of the borrowed item.
