Judith is a doctoral student in the research group Law & Technology at Ghent University. She is affiliated with the department of Interdisciplinary Study of Law, Private Law and Business Law. Judith is a member of the Human Rights Centre and PIXLES (Knowledge platform Privacy, Information Exchange, Law Enforcement and Surveillance), both established at the UGent Faculty of Law and Criminology.”

She takes part in an interdisciplinary four-year research project called #newsDNA (2018-2022) in which the primary aim is to develop and test an algorithm that uses news diversity as a key driver for personalised news recommendations, and to embed it into policy and regulation. To do this, communication scientists, language technologists, computer scientists and lawyers are working together. Considering her legal background, the objective of Judith’s individual, doctoral research is to construct a conceptual policy and regulatory framework for diverse and personalised news recommendations, taking into account requirements regarding the transparency and liability/accountability of algorithms. 

Judith obtained the Master of Laws Degree at Ghent University and an LLM in European Law at the College of Europe (Bruges, Belgium).

 

Considering her legal background, the objective of Judith’s individual, doctoral research is to construct a conceptual policy and regulatory framework for diverse and personalised news recommendations, taking into account requirements regarding the transparency and liability/accountability of algorithms.
