Background information

The Ghent Fund for History and Archaeology was set up at Ghent University in 2014 following a large donation from the Ghent Society for Archaeology and History (Maatschappij voor Oudheidkunde en Geschiedenis Gent, or MGOG). This society was established in 1893 and was dedicated to the study of historical and archaeological questions related to Ghent and Flanders. Nowadays, the MGOG plays a role in bringing together the academic world, the Ghent heritage sector, and the wider public. It organises activities and publishes a biennial journal, Handelingen der Maatschappij voor Geschiedenis en Oudheidkunde Gent, as well as books about (art) history, archeology, and antiquity related to the history of Ghent.

Aim

The Fund’s aim is to promote history, archeology and art history related to the city of Ghent by awarding an annual prize. Only students who have graduated in the academic year preceding the award are eligible for the prize. There are no rules regarding the nationality of the author, however the text does have to be written in one of the following languages: Dutch, French, English, or German.
